Barista review

Barista is an adorable little app that will show you how to use your espresso maker to make great espresso right at home. Unlike a lot of other coffee apps in the AppStore, Barista doesn’t just list ingredients and vague directions. Instead, it walks you through the whole process from prepping your espresso machine and texturing your milk to timing your extraction for premium taste and topping your perfect shot with a little decorative flair.

There are currently 10 recipes (caffe latte, cappucino, flat white, americano, espresso, ristretto, macchiato, caffe mocha, iced coffee and affogato) each with a small graphic and description along with step-by-step directions. For the more complicated steps, clicking the arrow on the right of each step will open the step with more detailed instructions. Barista features a nice set of videos for the home espresso machine basics and even 2 videos on how to create your own basic latte art. There is also a convenient section that explains the language of coffee making and a Tips and Tricks section, detailing all the little factors you’ll want to consider to make that perfect shot.

Though some people argue that you could just as easily look all these recipes up on the internet and then some, I find Barista to truly be an excellent example of quality over quantity. Barista contains the basic expresso-based recipes and is continually adding more. It has an extraction timer, a glossary, some tips and tricks and a few basic videos, providing everything you need without encumbering you with what you don’t.

Featured as App of the Week as well as in various iPhone/AppStore press releases and print ads, Barista is beautifully arranged and a pleasure to navigate around. With thorough recipes for a variety of different expresso-based drinks and detailed quality video demonstrations, you will soon never need to buy your morning cup o’ joe again.
