Toppler Classic

If you were a gamer back in the 90s, you probably remember Toppler. Well, Dmitry Volkov has brought it back for the next generation of iPhone users to enjoy, as a game app called Toppler Classic. Not much has changed: you’re still a frog trying to get safely across the pond while avoiding death by drowning or being eaten by an evil frog.

There are two modes for this game: Classic Game and Rush Mode. In Classic, you must navigate across the pond of endlessly shrinking and growing lily pads while eating bugs to increase your score and picking up extra lives and bombs to use against the evil frog. Tap the lily pad you want the frog to move to. The higher the level, the faster the lily pads will disappear. In Rush Mode, there is no evil frog to contend with, so the point is to finish as many levels as possible.

Playing this game definitely brings back a sense of nostalgia, and the graphics only help this along. They’re not fancy, but they do for the game (and how fancy do you want bugs to get?). The sound effects are perfectly fitting, and the fast tempo of the music only increases the game experience. The physics are pretty good, but its the fast-paced gameplay and need for good reaction times that keeps you coming back to play again and again. The name is quite correct, this game is a classic, and will probably be enjoyed for many more years to come–it’s worth the mere 99 cents.
