Oil Slicker review

Oil Slicker is a genuinely challenging interactive puzzle game in which you arrive on scene in a cleanup ship to the unthinkable nightmare of a terrible oil spill. It was released by Internet Information Systems for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and it costs $0.99.

In each level, you must tilt your device to guide parts of the slippery oil slick toward your cleanup ship in order to remove the toxic substance from the environment. Doing so, however, is not as easy as it may sound because you must also make sure that the oil does not come in contact with the various aquatic critters, which are swimming around, happily ignorant of any danger.

You may also find that the oil slick itself can be very uncooperative in your efforts to corral it to your ship. You are given a specified amount of time to complete your cleanup efforts in each level. At the end of a level, you are given a score and rating based on what percentage of the oil you were able to clean up. There are various point bonuses you can achieve as well. An environmental bonus is achieved based on how clean you kept your wildlife friends, a time bonus is achieved by finishing the cleanup in less time, and a level master bonus is achieved for overall efficiency in cleaning up the required percentage of oil. You have the option to save a game at the end of your completed level.

A percentage bar at the top of your screen keeps track of your cleanup progress while the time ticks by. Arrows on your percentage bar show you your cleanup goals. In higher levels you are given the assistance of a sponge, which can temporarily hold an allotted amount of oil. You are permitted to release this oil from your sponge in a controlled fashion when you see the time is fit keeping in mind that your cleanup goals are not reached until all of the oil is on the ship.

I found Oil Slicker to be a fun puzzle game with a creative and original approach. I was delighted that my high score ranked 16th in the world, which probably speaks more of Oil Slicker’s popularity and less of my actual skill.
