Little Ears

Mobiler’s Little Ears is an educational iPhone game geared towards broadening your toddler’s vocabulary with audio and visual stimuli. They will learn to differentiate between similar sounding objects and animals while learning their names. Bright colors, cheerful music and large buttons make the learning experience easy and enjoyable.

The game has only one menu with only one option: Play Quiz. From there the sound quiz begins. Presented with three different images and a British narrator asking “What sound is this?” your toddler must listen to a sound and then tap on the picture matching the sound. Every correct choice is rewarded with a “Well done” or “Good job”; wrong choices are met with an “Oops”. The narrator then tells your toddler the name of the object while the word flashes onto the screen. With 20 different sound quizzes and 60 different sounds and images in various combinations, your toddler will be quite busy learning the difference between what a firetruck and an ambulance sounds like.

Little Ears

There are some sound and image combinations that I found to be odd. “Scratching,” for example, does not really sound like scratching. Otherwise, the game seems to hit it on the nail for most of the sounds. Although the game comes in two different formats, it would probably be best to buy Little Ears on the iPad rather than the iPod Touch. With a toddler’s small but clumsy fingers, a larger touch surface is definitely preferable. Game play is good on Little Ears with responsive buttons and smooth transitions from quiz to quiz. The graphics are not overly bright or confusing for a toddler and the music is upbeat and cheerful. The British narrator is an interesting touch; maybe the next time your toddler says “airplane” it will be with a refined British accent. Overall Little Ears is an engaging game for toddlers, but they could do better with more features and options. Although geared towards toddlers, Little Ears should give parents more to choose from to make the learning experience more varied and richer.
