TLC Network review

Cable TV network channel TLC has released their iPhone app. TLC’s app features content from a lot of their hit reality-based shows so whether your guilty pleasure lies with LA Ink or Cake Boss, What Not to Wear or American Chopper, Toddlers & Tiaras or Little People, Big World, you can now indulge on-the-go. The TLC app contains images and video clips of their shows as well as “lifestyle guides.” Separated into five categories (Food, Family, Wedding, Style and Home), the lifestyle guides are essentially blogs ranging from recipes and fashion tips to interviews and personal anecdotes.

Only menus and blogs you’ve already opened and viewed are stored locally so if you have an iPod touch or can’t get 3G access, you’ll still need to be connected to the internet via WiFi to access most other contents like images and video clips. Though a lot of it depends on your internet connection, the videos still fall in the happy medium between decent download times while maintaining high quality sound and video. There are also links to the show’s iTunes store where you can buy and download full episodes or entire seasons. The app’s layout is easy to navigate around, displaying content in a clean and functional manner. You’ll spot ads here and there, at the bottom of an article or played right before your video but like the layout, they serve a functional purpose while remaining minimal and unobtrusive.

The app also offers Facebook and Twitter integration so you can post links sharing the clips and articles you like. Even if you don’t have an iPhone or iPod, you can still download and use the app, viewing content through iTunes instead. The TLC app available free in the AppStore.
