Open Cellar is a virtual Wine Cellar app by Matthieu DUCROCQ that has everything the wine connoisseur would need to keep track of their wine collection. You can keep track of your wines in both “workbook” (list) and “graphical” (shows a pic of the “bottles” in your “cellar”) modes. You can also look at statistics/reports for your wine collection, use the built in research service to look up different wines and import notes, synchronize your collection with the Mac or Windows version of the software on your computer, and even make free backups of your wine info on Open Cellar’s server.
The graphics are pretty straightforward, as they should be. The app. has no sound, and the only real movement that I noticed was in the “graphical mode” section- when you choose to “drink” one of your bottles of wine, in falls from its place on the rack and leaves the frame. The overall feel to Open Cellar is sophisticated and to the point, which is what I would expect from software that deals with wine collecting and tasting.
There is an extra “share your opinion” section that I appreciated where you can vote for your favorite Open Cellar feature, contact support, access the online community, and follow Open Cellar on Twitter.
One thing that I felt was lacking was the ability to see/share your collection with other Open Cellar users. If I were a fancy wine gal with fancy wine gal friends, I would want to be able to see how I measured up against my friends (i.e., competition) so I could see what I needed to add to mine to one up everyone. Also, I think a separate section for logging in wines that I enjoyed while dining out would be helpful- that way if I want to order the wine again when dining out or I want to suggest a wine to someone, I can access the information quickly. This section could be simpler than the cellar part- I think fields for the date, location, name, and brief description of the wine would suffice.
If you have enough money to have a wine collection, then you definitely can spare the $3.99 for Open Cellar. In my opinion, it’s more than worth it for the wine enthusiast.
