With the release of his iPhone app Pollys Popping Parrots Reloaded, Karl Reinisch has come up with yet another variation of the classic Bejeweled-type games. This time, instead of inanimate objects, you’re supposed to match funky looking birdies and pop them (not as disturbing as it sounds) quicker than your opponent can.
After choosing to battle the game (which has nine different enemies that you have to unlock) or your friend (via Bluetooth), a flock of different colored parrots fly into the screen from the top and settle on the grid. Your job is to find two or more parrots with the same color and pop them by tapping on them twice. Birds will shift down or fly in to occupy the empty spaces. If you pop three or more, your opponent will receive more parrots; popping eight or more parrots grants you cool tools to use against your enemy. These appear in the upper right-hand corner and include: Airhorn, Lights Off, Magic Mushroom, and the Thief, all of which slow your opponent down if tapped. But beware; your enemy can also use these extras.
Once you get over the disturbing aspect of popping parrots, this iPhone app is quite engaging. It’s very fast paced, as you are always playing against an opponent; in fact, it takes so much attentiveness that processing your enemy’s status is a vague afterthought. The extras are also an amusing addition, especially the Airhorn. They add a further challenge, as they halt your end of the game for precious seconds (on the other hand, using them against your opponent gives a sort of wicked satisfaction). The graphics aren’t the best ever, but they are cute in a cartoony sort of way. This iPhone game app is very fun, and well worth a try.

There is a demo video on the developer’s site. Always helps to see the apps in action.
Wouldn’t it be great if Apple came up with an idea to have a demo of all apps in the app store? Wonder how many people would buy more expensive apps if they could see them first.
