Racjin Co, Ltd. has released RETRO DRIVER, a simple racing game that waxes nostalgic for the days of classic gaming. Similar in gameplay to Sega’s Super Monaco Grand Prix, the main challenge of this black-and-white racer is not to crash. There are 5 total levels, very easy to very hard, all of which are unlocked by beating the previous difficulty. Best times are ranked from 1st to 10th, however it’s not very hard to reach the “fastest time” ceiling after familiarizing yourself with the track.
RETRO DRIVER stays true to its name in its graphics, layout and game sounds. The whole game is in solid color, without shading or texture. The tracks and cars, font and music all replicate the looks and sounds of old-school 8-bit gaming. The only indicator that this is a game released today are its touch controls, but even then, it stays very simple. Touch the screen to accelerate and release to decelerate. Moving your finger left and right will move your racer the same way.
I’d consider RETRO DRIVER to be more of a novelty game than a challenging one and although its gameplay value is pretty limited, it’s entertaining for what it is, a short venture into reliving the good ol’ days. RETRO DRIVER is in the App Store for $0.99 but there is also a free LITE version to suit your fancy.

Delicious, fluent and addicted gameplay, similar to “Le Mans” for C64. Re-play alert: movement pattern for the opponents is NOT random. Its always the same. Game & Watch style 🙁
