Tetryon is a sci-fi inspired, graphically advanced strategy based puzzle matching game for the iPhone that might appear simple on surface but can be difficult to master. You drag colored glyphs from the generator to the playing board, and place them in rows or columns in groups of three. The catch is the third piece must be placed in the middle of the first two pieces for the reaction to occur and remove the 3 pieces from the board. The glowing bulb on the left side of the board tips you to the color of the upcoming glyph if you really want to plan your moves in advance.
As the game goes on you also get access to wild cards called volatiles that can substitute for any of the five colors. The other special feature of volatiles is that they don’t last long and will blow up as soon as they are placed on the board, taking with them any matching colors in the surrounding blocks. Finally there is a stasis that serves as a holding tank for glyphs and volatiles you don’t want to move onto the board just yet. The stasis can hold 2 pieces at a time, and the board holds 25 pieces maximum. The is made up of hive shaped blocks and varies from level to level, with how many slots are open to be used versus blocked off. The combination of the dynamic board and new challenges in each level make Tetryon quite fun and addictive. As the game goes on you’ll start weaving up more complex chain reactions and crosses that raise the stakes even higher.
The game is broken down into 3 worlds (Prototype, Kemetic, and Bitcrush) each with 26 levels to complete. As you finish one world the following ones become unlocked. Along with the glowing colored glyphs, Tetryon incorporates sharp cutting sound effects and smooth transitions that enhance your overall playing experience. Each level starts with a short helpful tutorial that can be helpful at first, but can become somewhat repetitive on second and third tries. It might be good option to be able to disable these tutorials from the settings page.
Overall Tetryon from Boomslang Games is a unique twist on the traditional color matching iPhone puzzles that starts out simple and slowly grows in complexity. Its strong points are its highly polished graphics, quick learning curve and potentially addictive gameplay.
