Doom II RPG from id software is a new turn-based iPhone shooter game and the good news is, this one is not on rails. You use a directional pad to move around the screen plus you can now swipe the iPhone screen left/right to strafe or up/down to to move forward and back. You can interact with pretty much everything in the game including allies, enemies, dead minions, static objects, fixtures, doors, bridges and even walls. The controls are effectively designed for the iPhone screen, and although it might take you a few minutes to get the hang of the, once you do, they feel natural and efficient during gameplay.
The game starts out with a plot introduction and introduces you to the cast. You then move around the map blasting away randomly appearing minions in search of your way out. Pick from one of 3 characters: Major (Kira Morgan), Scientist (Riley O’Conner) and Sarge (Stan Blazkowicz). Choose your difficulty level: normal, difficult or nightmare. Characters have unique levels of strength, defense, agility, IQ, and accuracy. Each one is also set to experience individual sets of events.
On the bottom of the screen your HUD lists shortcuts to your map, PDA, weapons, inventory of weapons and health items, skip turn icon, and a link to the full menu. Tap the weapon icon to change to the next weapon or tap and hold to see a list of all your weapons. The sniper rifle can be fired by tapping the screen and then using the scrollbar to zoom in and out and tilting the iPhone to aim. Firing weapons such as the rifle, and the chainsaw are done by single tapping the screen. Tap on glowing dead enemies to pick up random items they leave behind.
You have an armor that depletes over time, which is shown on the vest icon in the HUD. You’ll run across a bunch of food, drink and energy items that you store in your inventory. There are also things like nano drinks, armor and most importantly ammo spread around the map for you to pickup.
The detailed colorful graphics, retro sound effects and background music in DOOM II RPG stay true to the classic DOOM style. Games don’t seem to be save automatically when you close the DOOM II RPG app. You have to go into the menu and tap the “Save Game” button so you can continue where you left off next time. Yo can also load saved games from the menu.
