BubbleWrap

True story: when we were kids, my mom once gave my sister a gigantic roll of bubble wrap for Christmas. The whole family spent months popping it all; it was fantastic. Knowing that, it should come as no surprise that I get a huge kick out of the BubbleWrap app.

Touted as the original and the best, BubbleWrap is definitely one of the most popular free apps out there. One pop and it’s not hard to see why. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like popping bubble wrap, although if you wanted to drive someone completely insane on an airplane, just install BubbleWrap and go to town. In all seriousness, this app is totally, brain-meltingly addicting for the person playing it, but great googly moogly is it obnoxious for someone just listening.

BubbleWrap

The, er, game is about as simple as it gets: try to pop as much bubble wrap as you can before time runs out. That’s it. Some of the bubbles are worth more, and eventually the bubbles will re-inflate, so you have to keep an eye out, but really, that’s all there is to do. You can’t compare scores with anyone; that’s a feature reserved for Orsome’s BubblePro version, so you’re really just playing against yourself, but for a simple and free app, you can’t really expect much more.

I found the controls perfectly adequate, and there are no punishments for trying to pop an already popped bubble, so it really wouldn’t matter much if you just kept wildly stabbing at the screen. It doesn’t really carry the same viscerally satisfying punch as real bubble wrap, but who cares?

As you might have guessed, this isn’t the most dynamic or especially intellectual app, but it’s definitely one you can get caught up with very easily. It’s also kid-friendly, although remember to have those headphones handy if you’re going to let them play with it in the car. The price is right and it’s easy to play, so you might as well enjoy. Happy Popping!
