Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is a sequel in which you control a monster truck and race down a track, perform flips through the air and boost your way past obstacles to beat the previous best times (as represented by a ghost truck that will run down the track as fast as the difficulty level asks it to be). This app is available from RedLynx Ltd for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and is currently on sale for $0.99 at the time of this review.
I am not a fan of monster trucks. I’ve never been interested in cars and trucks and all that. So it really surprises me how long I played this game before I actually sat down to review it. As I speak I am playing this game while looking away to type. The controls are simple. You tilt the iDevice left or right to keep the Truck in balance. In other words, if your back wheels aren’t on the ground, you’ll move slower, and since the level terrain changes, you have to adjust to them. When you launch into the sky you can perform a flip. If you can land on your wheels properly, you’ll gain an automatic boost powerup. The trick to the game and beating the time is to perform stunts properly and collect the boost powerups already on the track.
This game has great graphics. Really great. The trucks look really stylized and cool and the environments are all wonderfully detailed and sometimes can be truly stunning. There is one level where you climb up a roller coaster structure and oh man, is that one crazy detailed level. The camera really does a great job of showing the action and the explosions are always fun. This is a really simple game app that takes Monster Trucks and makes it work.
The sound is really strong and enjoyable. It fits the theme and pulls you into the wild and crazy fun. And that is what this game is. It’s fun.
Beating the clock, replaying to get better, and flipping all kinds of stunts to try and get the best score. I am having a great time with this app and for that, I would be proud to give this solid app a really high score, but before that, I really want to talk about one small thing:
When you play a race, you have to pay an entrance fee. If at any point you exit the race; phone call, text message, bus is coming to a stop, whatever. If you get interrupted and exit the app, you have to start the race over again. And pay the entrance fee again. If you are further in the game and have a good amount of money, this is fine, but early in the game when you barely just made some scrap, it’s a quick way to lose some hard earned cash. Besides that small issue, Monster Trucks Nitro 2 is great fun. Try it for yourself, and grab the first release Monster Trucks Nitro 1 as well.
