Google wave can be accessed from the Safari browser on your iPhone or iPod touch, as a web based application. To try it, you obviously would need to have a Google Wave account, and an iPhone or iPod touch. Open Safari, type in wave.google.com which will show you an error message, stating your browser is not supported, with a message saying “Sorry, it looks like you’re using a browser that isn’t supported during the preview of Google Wave.” On the bottom of the page there is a link that reads “If you want to continue at your own peril, go ahead”. The site actually contains the meta tag for being capable of working in the apple Mobile device (apple-mobile-web-app-capable) although lack of the Flash player on the iPhone could be the main reason why Wave not openly promoted to Apple devices. Just tap the go ahead link which will take you to the mobile version of Google Wave. Even though this page is not perfectly optimized for the iPhone browser and things run slowly, but it works.
The iPhone version lets you search waves, create a new wave, and see your list of waves. Tap to switch between single view or avatar view. You can also view and manage your Google Wave contacts from here. If you are watching a wave on your iPhone, the webapp follows the typing in real time pretty nicely. Again, this isn’t officially supported and there isn’t too much functionality such as attachments, but it works so it is a great alternative for when you are on the go.
Update: For a buck you can currently buy the WaveBoard app, which is the first Google Wave iPhone app sold in the App Store, which is going to give you push notifications soon as well.
