Let’s face it, to the average person, working a 9–5 office job is a drag. Staring at an office monitor, shuffling back and forth between the copier and your cubicle, the same routine over and over, day in day out… Joining the rat race does not sound like a fun gig. That’s where Cartel Publicite’s “take me away” app comes in. Office Holiday is your break from reality when your brain is sluggish, or in case of an Office Space-rage.
When you feel the urge to get away, just launch Office Holiday, choose a destination, and allow the app to transport you there by sight and sound. There are five destinations to pick from: Fiji, Tahiti, Seychelles, Madagascar, Bahamas. Just wait for the place you want to go to show up in the cleverly animated departures board (you’ll know everything has loaded when the world clock in the corner reflects your time zone. And when everything stops flipping around). Tapping on your desired destination will transport you immediately to an exotic, far-off locale (all of them suspiciously near the ocean). Once there, enjoy slide-show transitions of pretty beaches and unbelievably blue waters accompanied by the soothing sound of swelling waves.
Office Holiday takes a device capable of great escapism to the next level. Unfortunately, this app is extremely of the YMMV (your mileage may vary) type; I think the only way it would actually work for me as intended is if it was fed to me through the Matrix. The sound effects do make very nice background white noise, however, and it impresses me that each location has a different waves sound effect. It would be great if there were more pictures of non-beach areas, perhaps of something unique about each location (which is partially the reason for travel, anyway). The fact that there is no way to turn off the auto-lock is either a fault overlooked or a genius way to bring you back to reality for the end of your break. I suggest that there be a timer option to use. Office Holiday is very pretty to look at, but unless you really do find peace and tranquility in pictures of beaches, there are probably better apps to use your dollar on.
