If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at playing conga drums, now’s your chance. OutOfTheBit, in conjunction with percussionist Leo Di Angilla, has come out with an iPhone app to do just that. iCongas features three different conga drums: Conga, Quinto, and Tumbadora. All are played using the iPhone’s touchscreen.
Each drum is divided into two different hemispheres of sound, presumably to simulate the tones one would make while using the correct strokes. Touching the empty places around the drums simulate sounds made by tapping or slapping the sides of the drums. Toggling the Help Me! button is especially helpful in learning this. You can adjust the volume of each sound under Mixer or lay down a beat for future reference under Rec.
Turning on the Reverb for that extra little effect is also fun. Its lightweight package also means practically instantaneous sound once you touch the screen. All in all, iCongas is a pretty simple app to use, and sounds best when played with earphones in.
