Mr. Jelly

Rescuing the damsel in distress is a staple in Disney movies and fairy tales, but what if Prince Charming was…a green blob of an alien? This is what 4A Volcano Computer Tech. imagined and created in their new iPhone app, Mr. Jelly. As the introduction story shows, Mr. Jelly is very much in love with Miss Jelly, who opens a sort of shiny Pandora’s Box and disappears. Of course, Mr. Jelly is determined to get her back—and that’s where you come in to help.

There are eight levels you must complete in order to reunite the gelatinous couple. This is done by placing your finger on Mr. Jelly to elongate him in a rubber band effect: the farther you pull his body, the farther he will fly. He needs to hop from bar to bar (using his mouth, because he evidently has no arms), collecting “love beans” along the way (charmingly depicted in the shape of hearts) until he reaches a portal into the next level. But watch out for the nasty buttons that lower your points; deadly lasers and falling to your doom means losing a life. Other objects such as umbrellas, trampolines, and rotating tongs can help, but only to a certain extent. Naturally, the levels get progressively more difficult.

The graphics of this iPhone app are wonderfully done; everything is very colorful (especially the outer space backgrounds) and spatially very well thought out. The trajectory path shown when stretching Mr. Jelly is usually very helpful when trying to determine his next jump. You can also flick the space around him to move your point of view, but only slightly, so it is somewhat ineffective. Instead of instructions on the main menu, there is a mini-demonstration of how to play at the very beginning of the first level. This cuts down on preparation time (which was appreciated), but also leaves you in the dark as to what objects are helpful or even what purpose they provide. Losing a couple lives is inevitable as you feel your way through the game. However, this game is not overly difficult or tricky; the levels are short and the paths are usually clear. One word that can be used to describe it is: adorable. Check out the eye squint on Mr. Jelly when you stretch him as far as he can go.

And does Mr. Jelly rescue his maiden fair? You’ll have to play till the end to find out.
