Compression review

Compression is a fun and challenging iPhone game from Little White Bear Studios that uses aspects of Tetris-like games with a twist. It’s very addictive and fun to play as it has a very appealing gameply style. The idea is to remove all the hollow pieces from the board before you get killed by compression.

Unlike other tile matching games, in Compression after every 3 pieces that you drop down, the walls that make up the game squeeze in on you and the ground moves upwards, compressing your gameboard as if you were in a tomb. As a reference, look for the white dots on the walls which show which wall will move next. Keep in mind that as the walls move, the push their adjoining pieces along with them, which if planned out right, can actually be used to your advantage.

You can drag the pieces left or right to move them to different columns. Flick up for a slow drop, or flick down for a fast drop. Tap the pieces to rotate around. On the top of the board, you see the upcoming piece for planning. After you clear all the bordered hollow pieces you move onto the next level. You get points for chaining combos and finishing levels quickly. The only complaint we have with this game is sometimes when we were trying to drag a piece left and right, we would accidentally rotate it around by single tapping. It might work better if you have smaller fingers.

The game has an energetic soundtrack that adds to the excitement while you play, and you can also access and play you iPod music. The game graphics are very clean and the animations and design is quite well planned out. Compression lets you adjust the move and drop sensitivity, and supports online scores using OpenFeint. We loved playing Compression as it kept us going for a few hours and recommend it to fans of unique tile matching iPhone games.
