In terms of effort, you need almost need none to play Coconut Island’s Band Band Jump. In fact, it’s so easy there isn’t even an instructions page or a tutorial, just a tiny graphic in the lower right-hand corner of the screen telling you to tilt the iPhone. And that’s pretty much all you have to do: tilt the iPhone to control Stef, the afro-ed guitarist, as he runs around in the sky. Avoid both the tops and bottoms of the screen; too high and Stef will be electrocuted, too low and he’ll plummet to his death. You wouldn’t want any of that to happen to this cute lil’ fella, now would you? Stef can run off-screen on one side and reappear on the other side, which makes for a trickier descent. Check out the different kinds of platforms you can have fun with while jumping around; the bouncy balloons add a little oomph.
From the rainbow colors to the cartoony character design to the sound effects, Band Band Jump is definitely a solid ten on the cuteness scale. The physics are quite good, as Stef readily responds to the slightest tilt, even in midair. However, there is a distinct lack of substance, as you’re only trying to avoid the top and bottom of the screen…it doesn’t require genius-level intellect to play (it doesn’t even require both hands), so if you want a mindless distraction, this is the perfect game for you. But the developers promise at least three more characters with special powers and even more platforms, so it’d probably be prudent to grab this game while it’s still only $0.99.
