In terms of mindless, violent fun, Chad Towns’ Doodle Army is right up there. As a stick figure, you are enlisted into an army, sent through Boot Camp with the quintessential drill sergeant, and given one simple mission: make it out of all four battle zones alive. There are 30 characters to unlock as go through the game, as well as 25 different weapons: anything from a pistol to an assault rifle, with a flamethrower thrown in just for the heck of it. Use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to move forward, backward, and jump over obstacles. There are two control styles to choose from: Thumb Dial and Finger Fire, which you can change in the Options (you can turn off the blood from there, too, but why would you want to?). You can try them both out in Boot Camp. Then you’re plunged headfirst into the thick of it, shooting first and taking names later (or never). You pick up weapons and health as you kill the enemy, and the screen coats with blood as a warning to low health.
Doodle Army is just flat-out fun. There’s no need to strategize or plan–just run and keep your finger on the trigger. For a stick figure army, the backgrounds are pretty good. The music, however, is fantastic: patriotic, militaristic, and probably jingoistic, they’ll make you want to be all you want to be, and all that jazz. Sound effects for this game are equally awesome, as there are 25 different weapons you can listen to along with the screams of enemy. The controls are responsive (no lag at all) and the levels are long, so at $0.99, you can’t really go wrong. All it needs is a zombie level. Just sayin’ (mm, brains).
