Paper Fish review

You may have heard of ice fishing, but who’s ever heard of magnetic fishing? Luckily for us, it exists in Evenwell Digitech’s new iPhone app, Paper Fish. The paper part comes from the origami backgrounds, boat and fisherman, but the fish themselves are metals that are attracted to a magnet that you lower and raise in the ocean. There are three unique ocean locations for you to play in, two of which are locked; each location has multiple stages to pass. Tilt the iPhone to row the boat across the top, tap the up and down arrows on the left to lower and reel the magnet, and change the magnetic pole of the magnet with the N button on the right. Fishes will be attracted to one of two polarities, and you can catch more than one fish at the same time. However, you cannot change the polarity while you have a fish hooked, so reel the magnet up to collect your money. Watch out for the big metal sharks, which will destroy your magnets (you have three magnets to spare). Hint: sharks pass by the fishing line just fine. You can upgrade your boat, rod, and magnet in the Shop with your earnings.

For a game with such simple directives, Paper Fish is amazingly fun and addicting. The graphics are colorful and intricate enough to really create another world; there’re so many things to look at that sometimes the impulse to stop playing and simply stare at the screen in fascination is too strong to fight. The physics are smooth, and is one of three factors to keep track of while fishing, so the gameplay requires no small amount of focus. And of course, the stages get progressively harder, so you’ll have to employ a fast mixture of fingers and tilt in order to survive the dangerous oceans. The music and sound effects aren’t the best, but the beauty and awesome gameplay will get you, hook, line, and sinker.
