Magnetic Baby review

Magnetic Baby is an iPhone and iPod touch app that brings together the physics and platform genres in a delightfully challenging way. It is fair to say that there are similarities with Super Mario Galaxy, but Magnetic Baby definitely has a newer feel and is a more challenging game.

The idea here is to sling your magnetic self around various planetary objects using their gravitational like force in order to meet up with your girl in another location. The idea seems simple, but when you throw in lasers, portals and vortices and some other life ending obstacles, it gets somewhat more tricky. There are 3 different worlds and 60 levels to get through, so it is sure to give you hours of good fun.

The graphics are awesome, with hand drawn type design with the highest level of detail, it really makes the most of the retina display. Controls are interesting in that you can switch between tilt, pad and drag modes on the fly. Interestingly enough I found it easier to deal with various situations with different modes. The options are nice to have, but unfortunately the control response seems a little detached, and the result of your actions sometimes seems inconsistent.
The music also takes me back to the older plat former game days, it is peppy but nothing special.

Magnetic Baby also brings a level of difficulty that many iOS games lack, so if you are up for a real challenge this may be for you. There is good integration with twitter, Facebook and OpenFeint while the latest update adds an online challenge mode. The App is universal, so you can have fun on your iPad and your iPhone, but undoubtedly one of it’s best features is it’s price, at $0.99 (current) it is one you should definitely add to your collection. The app (iPhone version) currently has a 5 star rating in the AppStore, and I can’t find any reason to disagree with that.
