DeluxWare Bowling from Astraware is a casual full featured bowling app with a clean design, great sound effects and fluid gameplay for iPhone or iPod touch users. Pick any ball you want from 8 to 18 lbs and you’re off to the bowling lanes. Your viewing angle is looking down the middle of a lane facing the pins at the end. The graphics very nicely done. Balls are color coded and the alley is made of maple and pine wood. You have your 7 pointing arrows to help guide you in your delivery. Playing the game is pretty simple too. Just drag your finger from the bottom of the lane up and draw your line and finish by flicking it to the position you want the ball to travel. Keeping the ball from falling into the gutter was tough at first. Using a heavier ball helped us avoid putting too much arc on the ball after the release.
Play 10 frames, and all the main features of a bowling game are included including spare, strike, split and more. The game has a nice set of instructions for learning about bowling for those getting started. You can play against the CPU, and there you can set the difficulty level of the computer. The CPU has actual characters, with names, cartoon like photos and stats which is nice. We played vs. Max and Saeed. Max is a darn good bowler and cleaned up every time. You can also play against 1-3 other people locally, meaning you would just pass the iPhone around to your other friends as their turn comes around. You don’t get to perform an approach and don’t have to worry about holding the ball or your form in this game. Anyone, even kids, can play this game without knowing too much about bowling. There are decent sound effects too as you hear the ball rolling down the alley, hitting the pins and there are special announcements when strike and spare.
The game can be made somewhat less tedious if they get rid of all the “Tap to Continue” screens after each try. DeluxWare Bowling on the iPhone is an above average game and we enjoyed playing it. Apart from a few minor missing features and some needed usability fixes, we think it is really well made, addicting and good for when you have a few minutes to spare, no pun intended. You can download DeluxeWare Bowling in the App Store for a dollar.
