Essential Color Interactive is an education app for all of you who are trying to master the art of coloring hair. The app was released by P&G Productions for an iPhone, iPod Touch, (iOS 4.0 or later) and iPad and costs $16.99.
Wella Professionals put Essential Color Interactive out there for stylists and hair-coloring enthusiasts in an effort to offer the basics in hair dye. The educational experience is split into 4 modules: Hair Structure, Natural Hair Color, Consultation, and Principles of Color.
One of the first things you should understand before attempting to color hair is hair structure, covered in module one. Also covered in this module are hair texture and porosity. The app is interactive to aid you in retaining information; there are exercises that accompany each of the four modules. The three processes that are followed are Learn, Play, and Assess. You first learn by reading a series of facts about each module, then you participate in a few quiz-like exercises before assessing the activity.
In the module Natural Hair Color, there are three subsections: Hair Pigmentation, Natural Pigmentation, and Lightening Process. Hair is pigmented by melanin and the color is determined by what specific type of melanin is being produced. In module three consultation is addressed and you learn that all of the senses go into giving a thorough and successful consultation. In Principles of Color you get a breakdown of colors and how they mix. The three primary colors are blue, red, and yellow meaning no two colors can be mixed to attain them; they stand on their own. The secondary colors are purple, orange, and green and these three are achieved by the mixing of two primary colors. For example, red and yellow make orange.
Essential Color gives an in-depth look into hair coloring. I know if you are a brunette who is looking to go the blondest of blondes, no app, no matter how detailed, will help you out. Extreme cases should simply accept that their situation is not suited for the DIY movement and consult a professional out there who is already waiting for them. Otherwise, I can see how Essential Color can be a boon to anyone who is new to coloring and looking for a quick lesson.
