John Zorko insists that his new iPhone app, Magnatune, is not evil. Many would be inclined to agree, as his app strives to promote independent musicians world-wide, and never ones under a major label. Magnatune hosts hundreds of albums that you can listen to–and not just little 30 second clips, either, but whole songs.
The music can be sorted by Genre, Artist, or Album, found on the bottom of the screen. Once you select something to listen to and enjoy the full song, a short spoken announcement will play at the end to identify the song. If you particularly like what you’ve heard, there’s a Buy option, which will take you to the iTunes store on your iPhone. Artists will receive 50% of what you pay. A neat function of this app is that it asks you if you’d like to resume listening to music from your last session, which is always nice if you have to leave off abruptly. The cover art tends toward amazing, and the selection varied and interesting, so all in all, do give this iPhone app a try. Support your independent artists; who knows, maybe you’ll find someone you like. Especially since it’s at a non-evil price of free.
