Japanese cuisine aficionados would be delighted by Excite Japan’s app, Japanese Food Recipe. Filled with over 250 homemade recipes, you’re bound to find something to your liking. And lucky for us Americans, it’s all in English. Upon the initial launch of the app, every screen will have a mini-tutorial that explains most of the important features.
To find a recipe, scroll through the Home screen by flicking in any direction; if you spot a thumbnail that looks particularly tasty, tap it to take you to the recipe. (If you’d rather view all the recipes, just click the List View button at the top right corner.) There, you can Favorite the recipe by tapping on the red star next to the name, take a gander at the Ingredients/Preparations/Directions, set a Timer (the clock icon), or email the ingredients of the recipe as a shopping list (the green bag icon). Once you tap on the green bag, you can adjust the serving size, and the amount of ingredients will adjust accordingly. For your search options, not only is there a Free Word search, but also a few advanced searching filters, such as by calories or by cooking time.
One thing this food app is is gorgeous. The high quality pictures were taken by food photographers, and the plain and simplistic backgrounds help to set them off quite well–just looking at them makes me hungry. The interface of the Home screen is uniquely designed as well; usually your scrolling options are confined to either a vertical or horizontal list, so it’s refreshing to see one that involves all directions. Unfortunately, the tiny text is somewhat a deterrent if you’re glancing at the app while cooking, so perhaps a method to export the Preparations and Directions to a computer to be printed out would be helpful. $3.99 is a bit pricey for a pretty, glorified recipes app, but if they have frequent updates with more recipes, it would be worth downloading.
