Whether you are a mother with a family to budget for, or just your average cheap (frugal) person hit by the economy and trying to save, Groupon is an app that can provide you with opportunities to save money on all kinds of things. It was developed by Groupon, Inc. and can be used for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Appropriately enough, this app is free.
Literally appealing to just about any demographic, Groupon posts a new deal every day to save some cash on goods or services near you. It is available in 65 different cities around the United States, so even if you travel a lot, Groupon is an app that is worth packing along for the ride.
The App requires access to the internet in order to retrieve and utilize today’s special deal. Once this happens, you are able to read the Groupon money saving proposal, brought to you by a local company. You can then view the original price of what is big offered, compare it to the sale price and see what the percentage is in savings. If you like what you see, you have the option to hit the Buy button to purchase the Groupon, and the best part is, you will then redeem the savings electronically, never needing to print anything.
There is also a timer, which indicates how much time you have left if you want to capitalize on the deal and purchase it, and there is a box which tells you how other people have bought the deal already, giving you an idea of what other people think of it, and how well it sits as a legitimate way to spend your money. To help you out a little more in understanding what it is you might be buying, there is a section detailing the product and a review section. There is a “fine print” tab, for those deals that look too good to be true, which will elicit any catches or stipulations associated.
Obviously not every Groupon is going to be up your alley, but I did find the deals to be worth a look anyway. For example, I don’t need dental work today, but if I did, I certainly wouldn’t mind spending $283 dollars less to get it! The only catch I can see is that if you know you are an impulsive buyer, and you also need to be saving your money, be careful with this one because you won’t be able to resist.
Update: Groupon Now! is a new addition to the Groupon service that gives you access to Groupon discounts and deals in your surrounding area using by using the GPS location in the iPhone app. Use it to find coupons and discounts for products and services while you’re out and about. Store owners can use the Groupon Now! service to push out notifications for discounts when they have downtime in their stores. This way everyone wins. Customers get a good deal, and store owners fill in their empty slots with sales. Check out this video for a demo of Groupon Now!

I love this app. I got it about a month ago and have already gotten some great deals. Thanks for reviewing it and letting me know it was out there.
