App Cubby’s photography app, Kaleidovid, magically transforms the ugly and mundane of everyday life into something simply stunning. This app will turn your camera into a kaleidoscope, the optical toy-in-a-tube of fond childhood days. It is sure to provide you with hours of entertainment.
The app requires a camera that comes equipped with the iPhone (sorry, iPod Touch users). Simply open the app, point your camera at any object, and tap on the screen to freeze and capture your live preview onscreen. Then share the image with friends on Twitter, Facebook, or via e-mail. When you’re done, feel free to let your creative urges loose and take more pictures. With a slight change in your camera angle you can create completely new images with the same subject.
Controls are so easy, a small child could operate it. Kaleidovid works just like your regular point and shoot camera, but I think it’s alot more fun. Sadly, the image resolution is limited to the iPhone’s camera so don’t expect super high quality resolution, but it’s still pretty good for entertainment purposes.
The app could use a few improvements. To start off with, the name Kaleidovid is misleading because the app doesn’t actually record a video. A better name might be “Kaleidopic” or “Kaleidocam”. If the app could actually record videos, that would provide a great and trippy experience. Developers might also consider giving users the option to save photos directly to their Photos. Having to e-mail the image and download it from your e-mail account is a bit of a hassle. Future updates should also come with additional filters and prisms/mirrors so we get different geometrical arrangements of the same object. I’d also like to be able to manipulate the colors by changing the hues, inverting the displays, and playing with gradations.
Overall, this is a delightful little app for $0.99 and it holds great reuse potential.
