Have you been looking for a position for months and failed to get even a single interview? Do you want to pick up some new skills to make yourself a more competitive candidate for a position? Or do you simply want to learn more skills so you can stay in the know and feel more secure about your current position? If you fall into either of these groups, lynda.com’s FREE app is worth checking out. The free version gives you limited access to online video training titles in Lynda.com’s Online Training Library anywhere and anytime.
With your free subscription, you’ll gain access to 191 episodes within the 750+ online training courses available on subjects like Photoshop, Microsoft Office, CSS, Google Apps, Twitter, WordPress, and Flash. Once you subscribe, simply go to iTunes and search for lynda.com. Then download one of their free video clips and open the video podcast in your iPod or iPhone. You can open the chapter guide and start from the very beginning or begin with whatever section captures your interest. You can also fast forward and backwards through the different chapters and pause a podcast if you get interrupted or distracted. The app will also remember when you last left off and lets you start from there. Browsing for different apps by author, category, etc. is also a breeze.
The videos are great, complete tutorials that are available in good resolution. I looked through about a dozen of the videos, and the narrated projects by the credentialed experts I saw were pretty solid. The experts were easy to understand and provided good step-by-step instruction. They were easy to listen to and usually didn’t sound monotone or put me to sleep. The sound quality was also top-notch. There were a few tutorials where I wish they had done a close-up shot on certain podcast sections because the iPhone screen is rather small. During the videos, you’ll also see brief commercials and advertisements that try to persuade you to subscribe to the real service. This is a minor irritation and distraction, but the advertising was never intrusive enough to take away from the tutorial.
Looking over a listing of the different tutorials, it will be easy for you to see that lynda.com offers knowledge at a low cost whether you’re a professional or a dabbler. The FREE subscription service to the limited podcasts is bound to get you hooked into the real thing. It certainly convinced me to seriously consider dropping $25 a month for a basic subscription. Go check out this slick app if you haven’t stopped to do so already. It won’t cost you anything but your time.
