You The Man is an app that helps prevent you from driving under the influence. The app was developed by The New York City Department of Transportation for an iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and in line with the basic functionality of the app, it is absolutely free.
I am not sure I understand the title of the app, but You the Man is tool that makes determining whether you should walk or drive easy. There are four facets to this app: Picking a designated driver, delivering “shout outs” to friends who have taken care of you when you were drunk, calculating your blood alcohol level, and finding a ride.
Everything you could possible get out of an app that will prevent you from driving drunk is offered with You the Man. To pick a designated driver you customize the colors from 2-6 depending on how many of you there are. You then assign colors to names of the potential drivers, and spin the bottle in the middle of the screen. Whoever’s color/name the bottle lands on must drive and therefore NOT drink that night. The “shout outs” section is linked to Twitter, so you can post messages about sobriety or drinking responsibly via that social networking site. When you go into the BAC calculator you get a disclaimer notifying you that the accuracy of the tool is less than perfect. You fill out your gender, weight, number of drinks, and length of time and then the calculator will provide you with a report card with your level, what the state limit is for driving, and a summary of the penalties you face if you get caught driving when your BAC exceeds the state limit.
And to top it off, another tool offered in You the Man is the ride finder, which uses your location to find taxi servicers located near you.
You the Man is such a useful and valuable app to have on your device. Although the BAC calculator is not entirely accurate is has been very effective in making me think twice about getting in the car to drive even if I do not feel the effects of the alcohol I have been consuming at all.
