Never, never shake a baby! And that’s what the iPhone app developer, Sikalosoft suggests who has created an iPhone app called Baby Shaker. Baby Shaker for iPhone displays a drawing of a child and it begins to annoy you immediately. The idea is to see how long you can endure the sounds of a crying baby, before you decide to find a way to calm the baby down. Shaking the iPhone will simulate “shaking the baby”. Baby Shaker is now sold in the iTunes App Store.
This is a controversial iPhone app. Never, EVER shake a real baby! Shaking a baby is the worst thing you can do, and can damage the baby’s brain & harms the baby in many ways. For more information visit the Shaken Baby Syndrome website at http://stopsbs.net/
Update: The Baby Shaker app has been pulled from the App Store. Apple’s statement follows in its entirety: “This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store. When we learned of this mistake, the app was removed immediately. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and thank our customers for bringing this to our attention.”

As a child protection worker who has worked with children that are suffering the lasting effects of being shaken, it is very disturbing that any company would give opportunity to shake a “baby”. Is the activity that leads to permanent damage such as blindness, brain damage, learning disabilities, physical disabilities really what we want to promote? I am glad to hear Apple is pulling the app, but why was it offered in the first place? Maybe someone needs to spend some time with a child that has been shaken and their care provider to see just what really happens.
