Checkers! review

Do you love checkers? One of the great looking checkers apps we’ve seen for the iPhone so far is created by OutOfTheBit and is simply called Checkers! You play on a traditional 2D board and the gameplay is very smooth. Although Checkers! comes with a good quantity of options, the app is free of annoying bells and whistles, which makes it load super fast.

You can play against the iPhone in 1 player mode or against a friend with 2 player mode. The two player mode is not over a network, so you would basically be handing the iPhone back and forth to the other player. The options allow you to enter names for P1 and P2 to make it easier when playing. The options let you choose 3 difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, and Hard) and these levels are quite spot on, as Hard is almost impossible unless you’re a checkers guru. You can set the checkers rules as well. Pick from English, Italian, Spanish, or International (8×8) and start a new game to see them applied. You can customize the look by picking from 5 included themes.

Overall Checkers is one of those quickie iPhone apps that you can just fire up and play when you have a few minutes to kill. There is no background music, and the sound effects in Checkers! are quite simple and unobtrusive, and you can also turn them off if you like. A final option lets you disable force moves, which is enabled by default. Overall if you’re looking for a simple and addictive checkers game for the iPhone, give this app a try. The only feature we hope the developer adds is some sort of online gaming mode. It would even be great to have perhaps the ability to play over bluetooth or Wi-Fi with a friend nearby. throughout the day.
