It is with much fanfare that Resident Evil 4 has been released as an iPhone game app. The original game, released for Nintendo Gamecube, was very much a fan favorite. However, the game as an iPhone app is not quite the same as the one you know and love. It takes place six years after the fall of Raccoon City, with 12 levels to culminate the original story.
The iPhone version of Resident Evil 4 still features the same sort of gameplay as the rest of the series (third-person shooter, over the shoulder), as well as the same stop-and-pop mechanics. You have the options of shaking to reload, upgrading guns, and there is also a mercenary mode. The graphics are decent, especially for a game that was essentially shrunk to become an iPhone app. The touchscreen controls, however, can be inaccurate and slightly frustrating. The most disappointing aspect is that the original story has also been shrunk: there aren’t many cut scenes, there are no voice overs, and the plot elements have been watered down. As an iPhone app, Resident Evil is fairly impressive and more affordable to obtain than the original, but many would agree that the original is still the best.
