Meridian Digital Entertainment has released Alive 4-ever, an iPhone game app in the grand tradition of Resident Evil, the granddaddy of all zombie-killing games. As the story goes, a pharmaceutical company has released a drug that, oops, turns people into zombies. The government decides that leveling the whole city and ridding the world of zombies is worth it, and does so while leaving only two people alive. Unfortunately, the zombie infestation spreads, so the government sends the two survivors along with two soldiers, to kill as many zombies as they possibly can.
After choosing your character and accessories (there are 16 different types of weapons), you’re sent out into the big bad world. Alive 4-ever features a top-down (you’re viewing things from right above your character), double-joystick shooter: you move with the left joystick while you aim and fire with the right. There are 30 missions to complete, which can include killing a set amount of zombies, rescuing survivors in a given time frame, beating the big boss, etc. You receive gold, which you can buy new materials with, and points from completing these missions.
Killing zombies is all there really is to this game, but no one’s really complaining about that fact. For this iPhone game app, the most impressive aspect are the graphics and sounds, hands down. The amount of detail (and gore) is amazing, as well as the fact that the game runs pretty smoothly even with all the action going down on the screen. Also a positive is the multiplayer aspect: up to four players can play together via Bluetooth, which means more challenging missions. Alive 4-ever has a good fusion of story and escalating action, which saves it from being monotonous and makes the download worthwhile.
