E-Punk review

In a truly unforeseen turn of events, punk rocker rabbits have become environmentally conscious in Nitako’s game app, E-Punk (short for Eco Punk). As one of those rabbits, clean up the streets on your skateboard while avoiding traffic and cops; you might even have a chance to make your point rather loudly…with guns. PETA would probably approve.

To move the rabbit, tap and drag your finger anywhere on the screen; flick your finger to slide him across the screen even faster. The objective is to collect all the garbage you can by riding over them without crashing into a car, scooter, or Segway (all of which can lead to a rather bloody end). Collecting purple balls of light gives you a Shield and enables you to explode the offending gas guzzlers just by running into them; red balls of light gives you a gun with which to shoot polluters and their vehicles. There are 7 types of vehicles, 4 types of power-ups, and 3 game modes.

If you can get over the absolute quirkiness of this game’s concepts, you’ll probably be pleasantly pleased by the gameplay. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds to play, and the game gets progressively harder. The controls are are sensitive and very responsive–just remember that you can control the rabbit by tapping anywhere on the screen and not just on the rabbit himself, so you can spot and dodge oncoming traffic. Half the fun is in watching him move across the screen; if you’re lucky, he’ll do some spins and tricks while you guide him. And if you just stop touching the screen, he’ll start rocking out to the background music until you send him out into the streets again (always good for a few grins). True to the theme, the background music is original rock and the 3D graphics are outlandishly bright (watch out for the great insults, too)–this is not a boring game, folks.

All-in-all, E-Punk is a fun, polished app with a great message to deliver, if in a somewhat jarring fashion.
