If you are looking for a leisurely puzzle game then Truchet! should prove to be a good investment. It is an app brought to us by Brandon Wolf, costs $0.99, and can be used with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, as long as the device has 4.0 iOS software on it.
Truchet is a tiling game, originally founded in the 18th century by a Dominican monk. I am not sure if background information is necessary but I had never heard of it before I decided to try out this app. Basically, you are given a tile layout and you have to determine which of the tiles must be flipped to get the pattern back to only circles. It may not seem challenging but the first time I tried it I took a good 5 minutes trying to achieve the objective and even after I got all the lines into circles a message popped up that read, “Way to go! You completed the level in 64 moves (2 required).” That is sad. By the second level I had caught on a little.
The game comes complete with a How to Play section, which may be worth checking out. You also get the added help of a hint button. The game play reminded me of a Rubik’s Cube-there is definitely a strategic element to it. When you begin playing, the lines on the tiles are an unsightly lime green color, which you can modify in the game settings. You can also change the background color and the grid line color, or change the difficulty level from a choice of 1-5. You can change the level once you are playing the game as well. You can also restart the game (which I should have done the time I took 64 moves).
Truchet is a different kind of game than anything else I have on my iPhone. It did not require me to thumb through 10 pages of rules or directions, which is rare for an app game. It is addictive and distracting: Perfect for killing time at work, waiting for an appointment or keeping your mind off of terrifying thoughts during a turbulent plane ride.
