Playing Slice It! is a bit like getting an unexpected box of gourmet chocolates. You’re delighted by the package, of course, but when you go to bite into one, you’re extra pleased and surprised when you realize that instead of your ordinary, run-of-the-mill, drugstore chocolate, they’re actually expensive and thoroughly delicious truffles.
When I first caught sight of Slice It, I was expecting a halfway decent game; the graphics looked cute and there was a lot of excited buzz around it, but when I finally got around to playing it, I was absolutely astonished by just how good the game really was. Slice It takes all the brilliantly simple gameplay of Just Half and dresses it up in with deliriously chipper graphics and a fantastic interface.
The concept is dead simple: each level presents you with a shape, and you want to slice that shape into a specific number of parts using a particular number of cuts. Precision is encouraged, with extra points awarded the closer the pieces are to being equal in area. Best of all is when you receive the coveted “Perfection” award for slicing the shape into perfectly equal pieces.
It may not sound like much, but Slice It is a brilliantly addictive game. Each level only takes moments to complete, but you can play it over and over again, constantly chasing perfection. It’s also a deviously satisfying brain teaser, as some shapes are much more difficult than others. If you should get stuck, there is a hint system built into place to gently nudge you along, and there are usually numerous ways of completing a level, but there’s a definite thrill in chasing the “right” answer.
If this sounds dull to you, you shouldn’t discount the appeal of adorable graphics and cheery sound effects to keep you well and truly hooked. Every level is beautifully presented and there are plenty of them, which each one a tantalizing bonbon of puzzley goodness.
For the price, Slice It really can’t be beat, and I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if it started to give Angry Birds a run for its money as the most beloved and addicting game around. If you’re looking for a new favorite five-minute fix, then you really can’t go wrong with Slice It! You also get an iPad version of Slice It! as a universal binary.
