These are the cutest monsters I’ve ever seen. That’s all. Review done. Thanks for coming. … Ok fine. This is a physics game where you blow up areas of these little monsters and try to feed them to giant alien crocodiles that will spit the cute little skulls back out. Oh yes, there are skulls. Aaah! Chompsters, released by Big Blue Bubble, is available on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad for $1.99 and a Lite version.
Horrific violence aside, this is a brilliantly addictive game app. Aaah! Chompsters is the same developers of the Fighting Fantasy story series from one of my other reviews and honestly I wouldn’t have been able to tell if it weren’t for the App Store linking to other games made by a developer. This is a drastically different game then Fighting Fantasy. Here, you tap the screen to blow up one of 3 bombs. The little critters are piled together so when you detonate them, they go flying off with physics based on their shape and size into mouths of creepy monsters. You have 3 bombs per level but the more critters you feed, the more bombs you will get back.
Most of the strategy and addiction factor comes from a perfectionist’s obsession. A few repeats of a level are made painless and you try a level again and again to try and kill all the little critters to get the perfect score.
The graphics are great. Absolutely great. Some scenes have amazing lighting and silhouettes. Others have a great atmosphere, but overall, all the background scenes are wallpaper worthy. I would really like the jungle scene as my computer desktop. The little critters all have a shape-based skull that gets spit out and all the faces look horrified. Really dark humor right there. This is an excellently done presentation and honestly, it’s the best part of an already great game.
Aaah! Chompsters has A+ gameplay, A physics, and A++ environment art. I only have one suggestion and that’s the end of each level. There seems to be a slight lag between when you complete a stage to when the ‘replay or move on’ option pop up. Sometimes the lag is unnoticeable. Other times, it’s a full 7-8 seconds of waiting. I don’t know what it is, but sometimes it makes me feel like the app froze and I really don’t like that feeling.
Excellent physics game. Creepy, atmospheric, fun, bright, and cute. No idea how those themes work together, but they do. Get this one if you are into puzzle challenges, cute monsters, or if you just like to support good art.
