It’s February! Black History Month, President’s Day, and the month of loooooooove (a.k.a. Valentine’s Day). This annual reappearance of the lovers’ holiday sparks massive sales of flowers, chocolates, and gems, not to mention plenty of paper cards declaring cartoonish love. And what’s Valentine’s Day without seeing a couple of chick flicks? Romantic comedies, tearjerkers, slice of life…they are many and varied, but all center around relationships, developed or budding. Screenlife, developer of the popular movie quiz games, wants to test your expertise this time around on romance films with their new app, Scene It? Romance.
As with all their other Scene It? apps, this one also requires you to plow through several different types of questions, all centering around a certain theme. Scene It? Romance specifically offers 30 distinct quiz sets with 16 puzzle types: matching, trivia, identification, video clips and images from movies…more than enough to challenge you for an evening or two. Or, if it’s an exciting evening for two, you can play using the Lover’s Quarrel mode. In a group setting? Another multiplayer mode (you can tell by the title, Multiplayer) uses the device by taking turns and passing it around; there is also the option to play Head to Head through wifi or Bluetooth, if there are multiple devices. If none of the above apply to you, then check out the Love Meter–think of it as a mood ring, but for your likeability–and find out if you should approach someone. Challenging someone to a game of wits is very romantic, after all.
What I learned from playing this game is that I fail as a stereotypical female. Half the time I was choosing blindly, since I had no clue what romantic movies they were referring to. However, my ignorance did not detract from my experience: anybody can tell that a lot of thought and sweat went into creating this game. It’s a very effects-heavy app, as there are usually several things going on at once, but I experienced no noticeable lag in the animations or difficulty while playing around with it. The color scheme is very Valentine’s Day-oriented, as are the decorative graphics; the music in the background is the perfect accompaniment, light and sweet and fun. Most of puzzles are timed, so you’ll have to think fast on your feet, and obviously you’ll have to have seen the movies in order to answer the majority of them, so if romantic movies aren’t your thing, then you should probably skip this Scene It? game and try another one. For $1.99, though, this app gives you more than enough bang for your buck.
