Kickin Momma HD review

Kickin Momma HD is a “kick-em up puzzle game” for the iPhone and iPad where Momma kicks her little offspring to go and collect gems for the new necklace that she wants. Yes, I know, kicking your offspring is not recommended, but if you look past that you will find many hours of fun. There are not many games of this type out there, and it mixes the idea of a physics launching game, with the pinball idea.

At the moment there are three worlds and 36 levels with more worlds being promised in the future.
The game is so addictive that it is pretty easy to get through them all in one sitting if you are not careful. The worlds feature the ever present pegs, with rocks, multipliers, splitters, fire, ice and countdown bombs in varying amounts as you go along. These all serve to help you, but if you get it wrong they can also cost you.

As you make your way through the levels you will get items to accessorize Momma, but for the life of me I can’t understand why she would want boots and a mustache. There are also medal awards for each level and Game Centre integration as well as leader boards and achievements, but they didn’t mean anything to me as I just wanted to get back in to the next level.

There are two options for control, but the dragging option is much better than trying the controller button, and if your finger is in the way of what you want to see, there is a magnification at the top on the left. This is a welcome idea especially on the iPhone, and other game developers would do well to adopt the idea. There is no tutorial, but after a few kicks you get the hang of it and it is easy to play, so it is great for adults and kids alike.

The graphics are great with a quality arcade feel, and even with multiple objects flying and things exploding, there was no sign of slowing. The sounds are fantastic and they remind me of a trip to a busy games arcade, or to the slot machine section of a casino. I felt like a winner after each kick.

The only downside to this game is that it does get a little repetitive, and that may annoy some.
Other than that there is nothing wrong with this game at all, it’s fun, colorful, exciting and attractive not to mention easy to play.

Also, please note that the game is available in HD for the iPad and iPhone 4, but there is a SD version for older devices.
