Can your fingers keep a beat? TapStar is a rhythm game from EpicTilt for the iPhone and iPod Touch similar to other games like Tap Tap Revenge and Guitar Rock Tour where you tap on various moving notes to the beat of the playing song. TapStar loads music from a select library of Sony Music superstar artists Like Britney Spears, Lit, TLC, John Mayer and many more. Once you start the game you are prompted to download some levels in the downloads section. From here you can browse tracks sorted by new releases, featured, artist, track or rating. Once you’ve got some tracks, go back to the main menu and tap play to start cranking out some jams. A list of tracks is shown and your last score is shown here next to the track if you’ve already played it before. Pick a track from the list and tap to begin.

Playing gives you 4 difficulty level options including: Rookie, Amateur, Pro and finally the TapStar level for when you’ve mastered the game. You play TapStar in landscape mode which makes holding the iPhone while playing easier than other games in this genre. Rookie level is a good place to start, and will give you a sense for the placement of the buttons as well as the various color combinations and patterns. It will also give you a chance to get warmed up and get your timing right. The virtual controls are reachable and placed in the 4 corners of the iPhone screen, which are color coded blue, green, yellow and red. Tap the colored arrows move from the bottom of the screen to the top, just as they are above the target points on top of the screen. An accurate hit will flash the arrow, while mistimed hits will fire off a clank sound.

The green indicator is your health and increases with accurate streaks while the score is updated, and the blue bar moves along with the length of the song. You can tap the bottom to pause the game at anytime, and when you resume TapStar gives you a nice 3 second countdown before you jump back into the action. The final score will take into account the number of misses and your longest streak and overall accuracy. So pick up a copy of TapStar and start rockin’ out some jams on your iPhone. With smooth gameplay, great music and sleek graphics, TapStar is a step ahead of other iPhone rhythm games and shines out like a true star.
