Human beings are always eager to discover more about themselves, or to affirm what they believe to be true. This explains the prevalence of palm reading, online personality quizzes, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test. Another popular personality system used today is the Enneagram, a map that shows nine different “architectures” of human personality. The nine Enneagram types are identified by numbers One through Nine, and have distinct worldviews, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The Enneagram is also a developmental system, with each of the nine types following a specific path of development.
Sound like something you might be interested in? Well, Ginger Lapid-Bogda, Ph.D. (an internationally recognized Enneagram consultant, among other things), has just the right app for you to begin your journey of self-discovery: Know Your Type. The app launches into a rather helpful diagram of a pathway, which you can follow to learn and guide yourself through life. First, you’ll have to Find Your Type. This involves reading about each of the types and sorting them into two piles: Maybe and No. Once you get through the nine, you’ll have the chance to go through your Maybes over and over again, whittling away options until you finally decide upon the one that best describes you. The app will then further explain your type, as well as providing an overview of the other eight.
Once you know your type, you can go down the path and follow suggestions/specific instructions on how to live fully and interact effectively with others, according to your type. Particularly interesting is the page on Wings, Arrow Lines, and Subtypes, elements that supplement and influence aspects of your type (because not all Fives have the same personality). This ends the first half of the path, which is all about the individual and discovering the self. The second half is dedicated to the interactions between yourself and all the other types: how to prevent conflicts, build rapport, etc.
I will admit that I am one of those people who are curious to know more about themselves; I love to hear my “type” articulated in ways that I subconsciously understand. Know Your Type is a highly informative app that does what it sets out to do, and then blows it out of the water. There was never an instance of confusion–you are following a linear path, which is hard to get turned around on–and the explanations were clear and concise. The videos of actual, everyday folks discussing their Enneagram types is a nice touch, but may have a hard time playing in older iOS systems. This app is a great buy at just $2.99, so if you’re into self-discovery and betterment, then it should be on your device right now.
