ViKi

From Viikii Pte Ltd, ViKi is a free application for the iOS that allows people all over the world to watch movies and TV shows from other countries right on your iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone. The app comes with access to a library of TV series and movies from various countries, plus access to an entertainment news feed, all for free.

The ViKi team has painstakingly subtitled a number of movies and TV shows into various languages and made them available through this free iPhone app. Users can peruse the ViKi library and discover dozens, if not hundreds, of movies and TV series that would normally be unavailable to them due to language barriers.

ViKi allows the popular entertainment of numerous countries to be shared with people around the world. The majority of the ViKi library is from various Asian countries, and may never be syndicated in the Western world without extensive editing. In a few cases, a new version of a show may be made in another language, but this process inevitably results in drastic changes to the very nature of the show, to fit what entertainment executives think would have greater appeal to its new country of origin.

But ViKi allows viewers to see these shows in their original state, without cultural or stylistic editing and without having to rely on major Western TV and movie studios to discover them. Anyone who is interested in seeing what people watch in other countries, or who is simply sick of what’s on TV in their home country and would like to watch something new, will love this app.

ViKi is very simple to navigate. Its interface is set up similarly to the iTunes section of your iPhone or iPad. If you can find ViKi to download it, you can use it to watch movies and TV shows. Having ViKi on your mobile device is like getting a whole library of movies and TV shows on your mobile device for free– possibly more than your device would have room for normally.

Currently, the biggest downside of ViKi is its small library. The ViKi team is always working to expand their playlist, but it may not take as long as you’d expect before you find you’ve watched everything you are interested in. If you do find yourself “running out” of new material, however, you can still feel good about having chosen to download ViKi, as it is a free application. And ViKi’s constantly updating library means that if you lose interest in what ViKi has to offer, you can simply stop watching it for a while, and by the time you’ve regained interest, new material will have accumulated.
