Update: The QuasiDisk app has now been pulled from the App Store!

QuasiDisk is an iPhone app that can be used to tether your iPhone to your Mac without a jailbreak. QuasiDisk is also a file manager, with a built in FTP server and support for iCloud. You can also use it to transfer files to your iPhone from your computer and view the files on the go. The app supports viewing a variety of file and media types including Microsoft Office documents, MP3, PDF, MOV, MP4 and more.

Once you download QuasiDisk here are the steps for setting up tethering with your Mac.

  1. Turn WiFi off on your iPhone.
  2. Create an adhoc network on your Mac. On your mac click the WiFi icon in the menu bar and choose Create Network, give it any name and choose Create.
  3. On your iPhone go to WiFi, find the new ad-hoc network you created and connect to it
  4. Open the QuasiDisk app and click the WiFi icon on the center bottom of the screen.
  5. Note the Server Name (in my case iphone-4s.local)
  6. Change the Port to 5100 and tap on Done
  7. Now back on your Mac go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
  8. Check the boxes to Turn on Web Proxy and SOCKS Proxy
  9. Web Proxy Server is the name from the QuasiDisk app in step 5 above. Use port 6666
  10. SOCKS Proxy Server again is the same name. Use Port 5050
  11. Now you can refresh your web browser on your MAC. You should be tethering to your iPhone. To verify, the IP address on both the iPhone and the MAC should be the same.

QuasiDisk sells for $1.99 in the App Store and there is no need to jailbreak. The app will probably not last very long so download it soon. You might recall that iTether was another tethering iPhone app that was in the App Store for only a few days before getting banned.
