MyWi 4.0

You pay for a data plan on your iPhone right? And if you are paying for unlimited data, you are paying around $30 per month. That, of course, does not even allow you to share the data with your laptop. In fact, you have to not only drop to a lower data plan (200MB or 2.0GB) but you also have to pay an additional fee ($20 / month) on top of your data plan to share it with your laptop.

You may be interested in an alternative option you have available to you. As of today, iOS 4 users can now easily jailbreak their iPhones to utilize apps that are otherwise not available through the iTunes App Store. Additionally, this buys you the opportunity to download a nifty app called MyWi. The MyWi iPhone app is a simple utility that allows you to quickly and easily setup a local WiFi hotspot from your iPhone. You can in turn connect either your laptop or any other WiFi enabled device (such as a WiFi iPad) to the Internet on your iPhone.

MyWi app is pretty easy right out of the box with a switch that simply says “WiFi Tethering” on or off. Once you turn that on, you have an instantaneous local WiFi hotspot. Also available are other advanced options such as setting up WEP security, WiFi channel, transmit power, as well as the DHCP network.

If publicly broadcasting a WiFi hotspot about your person sounds scary to you, you also have the option of sharing your iPhone’s Internet via the USB dock connector connected to your computer. This of course, limits you to a single connected device.

MyWi will keep track of your data usage while your using it, as well as any active users. It will also keep running even after fully quitting the application.

All of this for free? Well, not quite. If you download MyWi from the Rock Your Phone app store, you can give it a trial run for 9 days. After that, you need to pony up $20 to purchase the application. Keep in mind, this is a lot cheaper than paying $20 / month for tethering with AT&T.
