In today’s day and age, social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter may lead us to believe that we know everything about our friends based upon the information that they share. But, what about the information they don’t share? Formspring is a unique question-and-answer app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that can randomly generate questions for your friends that you may never think to ask on your own — and often with very hilarious and revealing results.
When Formspring first launched its website in 2009 under the development of Formspring.me, Inc., it was set up similar to a social networking site and required users to set up an online profile and recommend that their friends join the site as well. Today, this service is available on a multitude of mobile devices and users who have downloaded the program can ‘find’ each other and ask either personal or randomly generated questions.
Although people who are already friends can use Formspring to ask each other questions, one of the best features of the program is meeting new people and asking them a series of questions to get to know them better. For users that are interested in making new friends, Formspring allows them to bypass the small talk and ask questions about the things that are important to them.
The first time I used Formspring’s iPhone app , I was quickly able to set up a profile and start connecting with other users. I only had a couple of friends who used Formspring, so a lot of the questions I was asked came from complete strangers. Perhaps the funniest question I was asked was, “Do you prefer mustard or ketchup on your corn dogs?” because it actually required a some thought. I asked my friends questions about their hobbies and musical preferences, and they asked me about my favorite foods and movies.
Once I had been using the application for a couple of days, I quickly discovered that more than a few users choose to ask questions anonymously. While Formspring is obviously a great tool to get shy folks out of their shells, it was also an invitation for questions I really didn’t want to answer. Fortunately, the Formspring app developers have included a function that allows users to block questions from those who ask anonymously.
All in all, Formspring is a very fun and easy to use program that generates lots of laughs. Formspring is also a very innovative tool that enables users to get to know their friends in more ways than they every could have dreamed. I’m giving Formspring a 4 out of 5 rating because although the concept is fascinating and extremely entertaining, the interface could be a little easier to use and less cluttered.
