Check out CondeNet’s iPhone app, Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List, just in time for one of the biggest food-themed holidays. Epicurious.com already hosts one of the most visited sites for recipe hunters, and now you can access over 25,000 of them on this iPhone app. Recipes are pulled from Bon Appetit, Gourmet, chefs, restaurants, etc., and reviewed by everyday people.
On the Home button, you can browse through recipe collections such as Decadent Desserts or I Can Barely Cook; selecting one will bring you to the first of many recipes, which you can flick through. Select View Recipe if something catches your fancy, and if the recipe suits your needs (you can view pictures and reviews of the finished product, if applicable), flip the iPhone for a cookbook experience: the ingredients will be listed in an enlarged font size and you can scroll through the preparations step by step. Or you can Search for recipes (the second tab on the bottom) by typing in keywords or using the filters. Tap the Drink button on the top right to search through beverage recipes. On any recipe, you can hit the plus button on the top left to add to your Favorites or Shopping List. The Favorites tab also allows you to see your recent views, while you can create and customize a shopping list through the recipes you’ve added.
The sheer amount of recipes is amazing, and the app will be automatically updated with more. However, no one has enough time to flick through thousands of recipes one by one to try to find the right one to make; further organization (like by preparation time, perhaps) would probably be a helpful time-saver. This app is wonderfully free, but there are ads that pop up while you’re searching, which may be annoying if you’re on a slow connection. The reviews that other users have posted are extremely helpful, as they often have constructive critiques and handy advice for substitutions or additions. The Shopping List is a great feature, and useful for when you’re in a grocery store…it’d be even more amazing if you could add ingredients to it. This iPhone app is worth a download, though, especially if you’re interested in trying new things in the kitchen.
