For anyone who’s tired of being woken up to that annoying buzz of their alarm, Orbicule brings Melatonin, a pleasant and refreshing alternative to the alarm clock. Melatonin is a naturally occurring compound which its production of is light-dependent. It is believed to play a key role in our sleep cycles with studies showing that its production peaks in the middle of the night and is inhibited by daylight. As such, being so aptly named, Melatonin’s target design is in getting us to ‘wake with the sun’ by gently nudging us awake through ambient sounds and increasing “sunlight,” and by sunlight, I mean increasing brightness on your iPhone screen.

Melatonin’s graphics are smooth and a pleasure to look at. There are three themes; Hello Birdie, Ice Ice Birdie and Oh Crab, each one with its own cute little mascot and accompanying theme sound that you can opt to wake up and fall asleep to. There is also an option to select a playlist to wake up and/or fall asleep to.

You can set how gradual you want your alarm to be by setting how many minutes early the sun starts rising before the alarm sounds as well as vice versa for the sunset to fall asleep to. The settings, which you can find by pulling down the “curtain” are clear and easy to navigate.

One of the biggest downsides with the application of the app (no pun intended) is that the app must be on for it to sound in the morning so that means you cannot exit out of the app and you have to make sure your iPhone’s battery is up to lasting the whole night (keep it charged).

Priced at $0.99, Melatonin is an app that takes a simple objective and delivers it in a clever and overall beautifully designed manner that is sure to help in making an early morning a more pleasant experience.
