Platinumloops is a music app. by Buzzyteam that allows you to mix your own music in different styles. The three different styles that I had the option of using were Electropop, Metal, and Ska Guitars. I took the first option to be the more “classic” version at first, because the word “electropop” doesn’t appear in the initial menu of styles, it only appears after you select the style. The Electropop option has five columns (tracks) consisting of drum, bass, guitar, synth, and voxfx. The Metal version offers fastdrums, stompdrums, bass, guitar, and lead guitar, while the Ska Guitar track choices are drums, bass, licks, riddim, and fx. There are four loop options for each of the five tracks within each style. You can’t play more than one loop option simultaneously within a track, but you can play one loop option from each of the five tracks simultaneously. You have to option of letting the app. mix for you in random mode, mixing live yourself, and mixing live while recording. The tracks you choose to record are automatically logged for you, so that you can play back your sweet jams whenever you want.
The graphics are pretty simple, especially within the mixing board. But its simplicity makes it easy to use. To the right of the loops in each track is a volume bar, and there are three horizontal bars below the five tracks that are “equalizers for real dj effects”. However, when attempting to use these equalizer bars, I didn’t actually notice a change in the way my music sounded.
Aside from the mixing section itself, there is a Help option in the main menu that gives a brief tutorial, and a Transfer option that gives you a specific web address to visit to download your recorded tracks onto your computer.
I have a few problems with Platinumloops. I definitely didn’t like that I could only play one loop per track, as my instinct is to press every button on the mixing board to create an obnoxious song. Also, I felt that even with the volume all the way up, it wasn’t very loud on my ipod touch. If I wanted my friends to hear my latest metal masterpiece, it wouldn’t come across nearly as brutal as I intended it to be if they could barely hear it. Also, maybe the equalizer bars could be fine-tuned so that the change in sound is more noticeable.
For $1.99 I’d like more style options- electropop, metal, and skaguitar didn’t fully quench my thirst for varied musical genres. But if you want a simple, fun way to make these kinds of music on the go, then rock out with Platinumloops.
