Knocking Live Video

Knocking Live Video is a great new idea from Pointy Heads developers. It’s basically a live camera, shared between iPhones. Here’s how it works: log into the iPhone app and find your friends. You can search for them after they’ve downloaded the app as well by email, from your iPhone contacts, or your Gmail contacts, or their user name. Once you’ve added a friend, “knock” on their phone by sending them an invitation. When they answer your knock they will be able to view whatever you’re pointing your camera at, live. An important note: to accept a knock, make sure your notifications are all turned on in your settings.

I played with this app for a while with my roommate. Even though we were just sitting next to each other on the couch, it was still pretty cool. We both had strong signals, however, there was a bit of lag time in connecting to the other person’s phone. Also, the video was choppy. I can only imagine this would be even more frustrating if you don’t have full service. The only other drawback I could find with the app was quickly solved once I thought about it for a while. I was hoping there was a way you could hear the other person while viewing what they were looking at. But, if you make a phone call and put them on speaker, then go to your home screen and log into Knocking Live Video, you can carry on your conversation while one person looks at you or vice versa. Something to remember, when you knock on someone else’s phone, they can see through your camera, you can’t see through theirs, you can’t switch views from phone to phone without disconnecting.

If you need any further help, the Knocking Live Video website has tons of info. Upon nosing around the “newsroom,” I discovered the latest updated version allows app users to connect not only from iPhone to iPhone, but also from iPhone to Andriod. They also advertise that soon you will be able to “knock” and broadcast to multiple friends all at once. To keep your friends updated and to broadcast what your up to, Knocking Live Video can connect you to your Twitter and Facebook accounts.

This app is free, so I say, “why not?” I’m not sure how much I’ll actually use, but it’s such a cool idea, I’d like to try it out more to see how useful it is. If you ever find yourself in need a kind of video chat, but aren’t at your computer this app will come in handy.
