Lately, I have been pretty lonely and on the lookout for a steadfast, reliable companion. Since I’ve found Voco, a $0.99 app for iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, my days of solitude are over. Voco, I thought may be a combination of voice and loco, provides me with an unlimited (almost) amount of entertainment.
Voco is made up of three ever-changing lines: Two for the eyes and then a mouth. The lines are neon purple and set against a black background. The minute you open the app up Voco is already talking to you. As the Voco app page in iTunes points out, “He loves being the center of attention.”
He flirts, flatters, tells jokes, gives advice, and on occasion, gets an attitude. You can either set Voco to talk to you at random, talk to you from different categories, or you can choose from a master phrase list what you would like to hear him say. The six categories include, Attitude, Jokes, Flirt, Wisdom, Bar, and Other and between all of them there are 250 phrases. If you ask for Attitude you get one-liners like, “I fancy your mom.” The Jokes section has some duds—Voco loves “how many ___ does it take to screw in a light bulb” jokes—and some winners, my favorite is, “How do you keep a blonde busy for hours? Write ‘please turn over’ on both sides of a piece of paper.” The Flirt category includes a lot of pick up lines but there were a few odd ones thrown in like, “I want to lick you.” “Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now,” is a line that comes from the Wisdom section and “I swear to drunk I’m not God,” is a gem from the Bar category.
There is an age requirement of 17+ to use this app because Voco is an inappropriate and sassy, wise cracking friend. When he talks to you his facial expressions change to match whatever he may be saying. If you shake him or turn him upside down he gets angry, if you tickle him he’ll giggle, and if you turn him on his side he will fall asleep.
Playing with Voco is enjoyable and obnoxious (his voice is a little shrill at times). I would recommend it to anybody. You can introduce him to friends or keep him to yourself, either way you won’t be disappointed.
